Formerly famed as the lead singer of noughties indie-poster boys Bloc Party, Kele (full name Kele Okereke) has steadily gained himself a reputation as a soloist in his own right. Part of this is surely down to the marked contrast between his newer sound and that of his previous work circa “Silent Alarm.”
“Trick,” his third solo album, released in 2014, owes a debt to the recent house music boom – populated with vogueish basslines and atmospheric vocals. A far cry indeed from “Banquet” or the most recent Bloc Party album, “Hymns” which was released in 2016.
At St Pancras Old Church however, Kele will take on yet another role, as the event marks the last date of his European solo acoustic tour. Promising at announcement a mix of old and new songs, Kele will most likely focus on his upcoming release, which he told The Guardian in November would be a far more intimate, and stripped back affair. Nevertheless, the frequent reliance of “Trick” and first album “The Hunter” on prominent, soulful vocal lines, despite the dance trappings, means that much of his back catalogue should translate into this palette without too much friction.
There are no support acts announced as of yet, however, with three albums already under his belt, and more music on the way, Kele shouldn’t struggle to keep the audience captivated. His gig at St Pancras Old Church is the only date of his tour in the UK, with other gigs scheduled for venues across Europe, including Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam.
Tickets are £17.50 and are limited. This event is for over 18s only, with doors at 7.30pm.
