London based three-piece Playing House have released “Jelly Legs,” the trail single from their second EP “Jocelyn.” With angular guitars, stark lyrics and an extremely catchy chorus, this constitutes another step in the right direction for this exciting band.
Playing House consist of Mel Patman, Killian McCorley and Izzy Cox, and released their debut EP “New Haircut” on April 8 last year. The band’s sound reminds of recent experimental pop-rock, with Everything Everything and Yeah Yeah Yeahs immediately springing to mind. Their lyrics are thoughtful, with the superficially optimistic titular track from “New Haircut” filled with anxiety and hope in equal measure.
“Jelly Legs” is a tangible step forward for Playing House, and a well refined slice of jangly indie-pop, not surprising, considering that it has been part of their live set since late last year. The different parts of the arrangement meld extremely effectively, as the complex instrument lines do not intrude on the lyrics, which like those in their previous EP are ultimately joyful, but tinged with angst.
All in all, “Jelly Legs” is a highly effective trail for Playing House’s sophomore extended play, which will contain three tracks in total, the others being “Missing” and “Penmere.”
